Surrendering Your Pet

First, we want to say we’re sorry. Decisions like these are never easy, but maybe we can help. Humane Indiana firmly believes bringing your pet to a shelter should always be a last resort. That’s why we put together a number of programs that hopefully can keep everyone together. Below are just a few, but check out our "I need help keeping my pet" page for more programs.

REHOME PROGRAM

The Rehome program allows you to safely rehome your pet(s) through a database that finds families who want to adopt pets in your area. You can participate by adopting or by placing your pet for adoption.

THINGS TO KNOW

  • Rehome allows pets to go directly into their new home without the stress of being surrendered to the shelter.
  • Sample rehoming agreements/contracts are available on the Rehome website under the How It Works tab. Owners and potential adopters interview each other, and a list of good questions are available on the website.
  • Humane Indiana and Rehome recommend meeting in a public location using the buddy system for the safety of all parties involved.
  • Humane Indiana loosely monitors the location of pets listed for adoption to ensure that we are marketing pets within our community, but makes no guarantees to any animal’s health, temperament, or history. We encourage adopters to have their new pet evaluated by a veterinarian upon adoption.

TEMPORARY FOSTER CARE

Humane Indiana never wants to turn away an animal in need. When our shelter reaches capacity, some of our pets need a temporary place to live so we can make room for more. Our selfless foster families are called upon to share their home, providing a loving transition while their foster pet is matched with a forever home through our services.

ANIMALS WHO NEED YOUR HELP INCLUDE:

  • Orphaned puppies and kittens who are too young to live in the shelter.
  • Canines and felines in need of socialization.
  • Dogs and cats with medical issues who need extra special care.

SUPPLIES PROVIDED TO FOSTER HOMES INCLUDE:

  • Food
  • Medication
  • Bedding
  • Crates
  • Bottles
  • Other necessary supplies
